Tell MarginOS about your brand (Brand Profile)

Last updated: September 23, 2026 By Aron Baczoni

Quick Reference

Inputs

Admin access and about a minute. Five multiple-choice answers about your business, plus an optional mobile number. Nothing to look up or prepare.

Outputs

A saved brand profile — vertical, reorder pattern, revenue band, team size and primary goal — plus the default hero-product velocity level your revenue band sets.

Outcomes

Answer the five questions confidently, know which one actually changes a figure, and know where each of them can be changed afterwards.

Brand Profile is step 1 of Express Setup: five multiple-choice questions about your business, plus one optional phone number. It takes about a minute. All five are required — Continue to data connections stays greyed out until each one has an answer — and one of them, your revenue band, does more than describe you: it sets the starting bar for which of your products count as fast sellers.

What the Brand Profile step is

The screen opens on “Welcome, let’s tailor MarginOS to your brand”, and the questions are deliberately coarse. A category, a reorder pattern, a revenue band, a team size, and the one thing you most want fixed. Nothing on this screen asks for a figure you would have to go and look up.

It is worth being clear about what these answers do and do not touch. They do not change your money math. Your revenue, your costs and your profit come from your orders and your cost data — never from what you type here. What they change is framing: which products MarginOS treats as your important ones, and what we know about your business when you ask us for help.

Before you start

  • You need admin access. Everyone else sees an access notice instead of the wizard, so if setup is not yours to run, ask an admin on your workspace.
  • A new account is sent here automatically and kept here until setup is finished, so you are unlikely to have to go looking for this screen.
  • Step 1 answers are held in the browser tab, not yet saved to your account. That is what lets the Shopify authorisation in step 2 send you away and bring you back without losing them. It also means that closing the tab before you finish loses them — it is a one-minute screen, not a long form, so this is a small cost.

Answer the five questions

  1. What type of products do you sell? Eight categories: Supplements & Wellness, Skincare & Beauty, Food & Beverage, Pet Products, Apparel & Accessories, Home & Lifestyle, Electronics & Gadgets, and Other. If two fit, pick the one that earns the most revenue. Other is a real answer, not a failure to choose.
  2. Customer reorder cycle — “Are your products designed to be purchased repeatedly?” Three answers: Yes, highly consumable, Mixed (some replenishable, some durable), or No, mostly one-time durable purchases. Answer for the catalogue as a whole; the mixed option exists because most brands are mixed.
  3. Annual Revenue Run Rate — six bands, from Under $1M to $20M+. Answer where you are now, not where you expect to be, because this is the one answer that sets a live number.
  4. Team Size — five bands, from Solo or 1-3 through to 80+ employees.
  5. Primary Goal for MarginOS — Profit per order & CAC, Fix stockouts / overstock, LTV & Repeat purchases, or Automated Reporting. Pick the one that would annoy you most to still have wrong in three months.

Underneath sits Founder / operator mobile (optional), and it is exactly what it says: a number for a direct operator-to-operator conversation about getting set up. It feeds nothing automated. Leave it blank if you would rather not, and the step still completes.

Finish with Continue to data connections.

What each answer is used for

Question What it is used for
What type of products do you sell? Recorded on your business profile as your vertical. Editable afterwards under Settings → Business Profile → Business Details.
Customer reorder cycle Recorded as a description of your catalogue. It is not the schedule MarginOS replenishes against — each product gets its own reorder cycle worked out from your own catalogue data.
Annual Revenue Run Rate Sets your default hero product velocity bar — how fast a product has to sell to count as one of your important ones. See below.
Team Size Recorded on your business profile.
Primary Goal for MarginOS Recorded on your business profile.
Founder / operator mobile (optional) Stored with your business details as a contact number. Nothing is triggered by it.

How your revenue band becomes a number

Several things MarginOS shows you depend on knowing which products matter — the fast sellers whose margins are worth your attention, as opposed to the long tail. That needs a velocity level: units sold over the last 30 days, above which a product counts as a hero for your store.

On day one there is no history to derive that level from, and a single universal number would be wrong for nearly everyone — it would make every product a hero for a large brand and none for a small one. So your revenue band supplies the starting level, scaled to stores of your size. You can see the exact figure it produces: it is listed as Hero SKU Threshold in the industry-defaults panel on step 3 of setup, and it updates as you change your band.

It is a starting point, not a verdict. Once you know your catalogue’s real shape, set the level yourself under Settings → Business Profile → Advanced Settings, in the field labelled Hero SKU Velocity Threshold (Units/30d). Leave that field blank and your revenue-band default stays in force.

Example

A brand under $1M and a brand over $20M both sell a product moving a few hundred units a month. For the small brand that is unmistakably a hero: it is a meaningful share of everything they ship, and a thin margin on it is a real problem. For the large brand the same product is ordinary, and flagging it alongside genuine heroes would bury the products that actually move the business.

Same product, same units, different answer — which is the whole reason the question is asked. Choosing a band well above your real size quietly empties your hero set; choosing one well below fills it with everything you sell. Either way the underlying profit figures are unchanged and correct. It is your shortlist that suffers.

Changing your answers later

  • Your vertical is editable under Settings → Business Profile → Business Details, along with your business name, address and phone number.
  • The other four answers — reorder cycle, revenue band, team size and primary goal — are set here in setup. Reopen the setup wizard to change one; your existing answers are filled in, so you only touch the one you want.
  • The hero velocity level itself is overridable directly in Advanced Settings, as above. If the revenue band was only ever bothering you because of that number, change the number and leave the band alone.

Common questions

Do I have to answer all five?

Yes. Continue to data connections stays disabled until every one of the five has an answer. Only the mobile number is optional.

My products do not fit any of the categories.

Choose Other. The vertical is recorded, not used to compute anything, so a rough fit costs you nothing — and a wrong-but-specific answer is worse than an honest Other.

Does my team size or primary goal change my numbers?

No. Both are context we hold about your business. Your revenue band is the only answer on this screen that produces a figure, and even that one only sets the bar for which products are treated as heroes — never a cost, a margin or a profit.

I picked the wrong revenue band. What happens?

Your hero set gets larger or smaller than it should be, which shows up as too many or too few products flagged for attention. No money figure is affected. Fix it by reopening setup and changing the band, or by setting the velocity level explicitly in Advanced Settings.

I closed the tab halfway through. Where did my answers go?

Step 1 answers live in that browser tab until setup is saved at the end of step 3, so they are gone. Reopening setup starts you on a blank step 1 — about a minute of work. Once setup has been completed, your answers are saved to your account and pre-filled every time you return.
